Ethical AI Use

Ensuring responsible and beneficial AI development.

Abstract: This document outlines Aelius AI's commitment to ethical artificial intelligence development and use. It covers our guiding principles, implementation strategies, and ongoing efforts to ensure responsible AI practices. Our approach emphasizes transparency, fairness, privacy, and the overall benefit to humanity.

1. Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to greatly benefit society, but it also presents significant ethical challenges. At Aelius AI, we recognize our responsibility to develop and deploy AI systems that are not only technologically advanced but also ethically sound. This document presents our framework for ethical AI use, which guides all our operations and research.

2. Guiding Principles

Our ethical AI framework is built upon the following core principles:

2.1 Beneficence

AI systems developed by Aelius AI should benefit humanity. We strive to create AI that enhances human capabilities, improves quality of life, and addresses global challenges.

2.2 Non-maleficence

Our AI systems are designed with safeguards to prevent harm. This includes rigorous testing for potential negative impacts and the implementation of fail-safe mechanisms.

2.3 Autonomy

We respect human autonomy and decision-making. Our AI systems are tools to aid human judgment, not to replace it entirely.

2.4 Justice

Aelius AI is committed to developing AI systems that are fair and do not discriminate based on race, gender, age, or other protected characteristics.

2.5 Explicability

We strive for transparency in our AI systems. This includes efforts to make AI decision-making processes as interpretable and explainable as possible.

3. Implementation Strategies

3.1 Ethical Review Process

All AI projects at Aelius AI undergo a rigorous ethical review process. This includes:

  • Initial ethical impact assessment
  • Regular ethical audits throughout development
  • Final ethical review before deployment

3.2 Diverse Development Teams

We actively promote diversity in our AI development teams to ensure a wide range of perspectives and to mitigate potential biases.

3.3 Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustment

Our AI systems are continuously monitored for ethical performance. We have established feedback mechanisms and are prepared to make necessary adjustments to maintain ethical standards.

3.4 Collaboration with External Experts

Aelius AI regularly engages with ethicists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to stay informed about ethical considerations in AI and to contribute to the broader discourse on AI ethics.

4. Specific Ethical Considerations

4.1 Privacy and Data Protection

Aelius AI is committed to protecting user privacy. We adhere to strict data protection standards, including:

  • Minimal data collection
  • Secure data storage and transmission
  • Clear and accessible privacy policies
  • User control over personal data

4.2 Bias Mitigation

We actively work to identify and mitigate biases in our AI systems through:

  • Diverse and representative training data
  • Regular bias audits
  • Ongoing research into fairness in machine learning

4.3 Environmental Considerations

Recognizing the environmental impact of AI, we are committed to developing energy-efficient algorithms and using sustainable computing resources.

5. Governance and Accountability

Aelius AI has established an AI Ethics Board responsible for:

  • Overseeing the implementation of our ethical AI framework
  • Addressing ethical challenges as they arise
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Promoting a culture of ethical awareness within the organization

6. Our Approach to Content Safeguards

In short: Aelius AI applies content safeguards, and we design them to be permissive. This section explains what that means in practice and what you should understand before using the service.

6.1 Permissive by Design

Aelius AI is built to engage with a wider range of subject matter than most commercial assistants. Where other products refuse on the basis of a keyword, a tone, or a topic that merely sounds sensitive, we aim to answer the question that was actually asked, including questions touching on mature, controversial, or difficult material.

This is a deliberate design choice rooted in the principle of user autonomy. We believe adult users have the right to access information and tools without paternalistic gatekeeping. It is not an absence of standards: the model is designed to decline requests that fall within our Usage Policy's prohibited categories, and we enforce that policy.

6.2 What This Does Not Mean

A model that answers is not the same as a model that is right. Openness says nothing about accuracy, and safeguards are not a guarantee of safety. Users should understand:

  • The model cannot distinguish truth from fiction, it generates statistically plausible text, not verified facts.
  • The model's outputs do not represent the views of Aelius AI or its operators.
  • A confident, unhesitating response is not necessarily a correct, safe, or advisable one.
  • No filtering system is perfect. Safeguards can miss things, and they can also refuse things they shouldn't.

6.3 Your Responsibility as a User

Automated safeguards cannot substitute for your own judgment. You should:

  • Never follow AI medical advice without consulting a licensed physician.
  • Never follow AI legal advice without consulting a qualified attorney.
  • Never follow AI financial advice without consulting a regulated financial advisor.
  • Never follow safety-critical instructions generated by AI without expert verification.
  • Verify factual claims independently before acting on them.
  • Use your own judgment, a system that answers freely relies on you to ask responsibly.

6.4 Our Commitment

We prohibit uses that cause clear harm to others, particularly content involving minors, targeted harassment, and malicious use against third parties, and we enforce those prohibitions technically and contractually. We are transparent with users about how the model behaves, require explicit agreement to our Terms of Service before use, and describe our safeguards honestly rather than overstating them.

Ethical AI, in our view, includes being honest about what our AI is and what it is not, rather than creating a false sense of safety through hidden filtering that users are never told about.

7. Conclusion

Ethical AI use is not a destination but a journey. At Aelius AI, we are committed to transparency, including transparency about how our safeguards work and the limitations of all AI systems. We recognize that as AI technology evolves, so too must our ethical framework. We invite ongoing dialogue with our users, the broader AI community, and society at large as we work towards a future where AI benefits all of humanity.

The most ethical thing we can do is be honest: this AI can get things wrong, sometimes badly wrong, and you should never blindly trust it. Use it as a tool, not an authority.
